The Canadiens should claim Jeff Schultz on waivers.

So Jeff Schultz is about to be bought out and is on waivers now.  We've been over this ground before, how his size and style of play would complement our defence corps.  Would it make sense to claim his $2.75M contract right now?  Instead of waiting for him to hit free agency and having to bid for his services?  We wouldn't even have to give up an asset in return, and if it doesn't work out, he's only under contract for a year.

It seems that there are extenuating circumstances to his being a healthy scratch, beyond the obvious 'he wasn't good enough'.  According to Adam Vingan:

Last season, Schultz fell victim to head coach Adam Oates's philosophy of playing his defensemen on their natural side, Therefore, Schultz, who shoots left, was the odd man out behind Karl Alzner, John Erskine and Jack Hillen and did not play after March 31.

Depending on Marc Bergevin's plans for the cap room he increased by buying out Tomas Kaberle, like the Vincent Lecavalier sweepstakes for example, it may make sense to just grab the big Capitals defenceman and plug him into our lineup.
