Drafting Collberg, Hudon, Reway, L...Hello Normand.

Drafting Collberg, Hudon, Reway, Lehkonen, Andrighetto etc only increases the probability of 1 or 2 of them panning out, which only ensures the number of small guys in the line-up. However, in that same rationale then shouldn't drafting more guys like; McCarron, de La Rose, etc only increase the chances of having one of two more big bodies make it to the big leagues? Why is TT taking late round punts on smaller guys at the expense of solid value, bigger players?

This thinking abt taking a home run swing at another midget but unwilling to take a flyer on William Carrier or Hudson Fasching just means the Habs are doomed to be full of small players. Theres nothing wrong with a Marty St Louis or a Brad Marchand but they are surrounded by big guys. The Habs lost to the Sens shows how a bigger team can wear these guys out. It was like a varsity team exposing a high school team.

The Habs need to revamp its drafting philosphy and that starts with the guy at the top. I think Timmins has a good eye for spotting Dmen, europeans and gritty little players but this hoping to hit a home run on a midget while ignoring a big grinding winger who can play on the 3rd/4th line is his achilles heel.

Its interesting St Louis moved up to pick William Carrier and LA scooped up Hudson Fasching after the Habs passed on them. These teams recognize the value of having players like this in their line-up or stockpiling them in their system. More of these types the better, while Timmins keeps hoping to draft another Gallagher trying to prove how much smarter he is rather than looking at the solid value of a big, tough, griding winger.

His post-draft interview was intriguing;

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8chRt7gvZxs

-Look at how little he talks abt McCarron as opposed to how he raved abt de la Rose. I think this shows McCarron was MB's pick where de la Rose and Lehkonen were his guys.

-His comments abt drafting Connor Crisp; "He's a heck of an athlete and hes tough. Yes we addressed a need by drafting him. Sometimes you have to (GOON)." This sounded like it came out of the mouth of MB. Looking over TT's draft record he never once drafted a enforcer.

I think there was a disconnect in this years draft between the new GM's philosophy, the types of players available "the Big D, power forward draft" and TTs evaluation of the BPA. Somethings got to give.SUMOnoreply@blogger.com
